Michael Gray, who played Billy Batson on television’s Shazam! from 1974 to 1976, died October 16 in Palm Desert, California, at 75. His family said he died of natural causes. Across 28 episodes, Gray became a familiar presence in children’s living rooms—and a teen idol whose popularity sometimes made leaving home difficult. Eventually, he stepped away from Hollywood, running a flower shop with his wife and working in fashion and children’s educational theater.
Only years later did Gray fully appreciate the show’s impact, as grown fans told him its lessons had helped shape their lives. He returned occasionally to acting, including a cameo in 2023’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Remembering him, costar John Davey praised his warmth, humor and joy in meeting fans. Gray is survived by his wife of more than 30 years, two stepchildren and his son-in-law. His brief television adventure left an enduring human connection.
