Teen who fell 10,000 feet from a plane into the Amazon survived 11 days alone thanks to one lesson from her dad

In December 1971, a thunderstorm tore apart the aircraft carrying Juliane Koepcke and her mother from Lima. Still strapped to a row of seats, the teenager plunged into the Peruvian rainforest. She regained consciousness with a broken collarbone, deep cuts, and no glasses. But the forest was not unfamiliar territory: her parents, both scientists, had raised her at their remote research station, Panguana. Recognizing its wildlife helped her draw on knowledge that fear and confusion had temporarily buried.

Remembering her father’s guidance, Juliane followed a watercourse, hoping it would lead to people. Heavy rain soaked her thin dress, and nights brought cold and profound loneliness. After eleven days, she reached a small shelter, where local fishermen eventually found her and helped her return to safety. Reunited with her father, she later learned her mother had died. Her extraordinary survival carried an enduring grief: rescue could not bring back the person she had lost.
