A Dairy Queen Sign in Wisconsin Sparks Online Discussion—Here’s Why

A Dairy Queen in Kewaskum, Wisconsin drew attention after a sign in its window went viral online. The message described the restaurant as “politically incorrect,” referencing phrases like “Merry Christmas,” “Happy Easter,” and “God Bless America,” alongside expressions of support for the U.S. flag, military members, and a tradition of free veteran sundaes on Veterans Day.

Owner Kevin Scheunemann explained the sign had been posted years earlier after a customer complained about Christian music playing in the restaurant, intending it to clarify the establishment’s atmosphere and prevent future misunderstandings. After a customer shared a photo online, the sign gained national attention, sparking debate about personal beliefs in privately owned businesses. Reactions were mixed—some supported the owner’s right to express his values, while others questioned whether the wording risked excluding certain customers.Dairy Queen’s corporate office clarified that the sign reflected the independent franchise owner’s views, not the company’s, emphasizing that all customers should be treated with respect. The incident became part of a broader conversation about personal expression, business identity, and how companies navigate individual beliefs while striving for inclusivity.
