The show’s most painful change involved Bea Benaderet, whose illness forced the writers to accommodate Kate Bradley’s absences. During her final contribution, her voice helped preserve the character while a stand-in supplied the physical presence. Benaderet died in 1968, leaving an absence no casting change could erase.
