Don’t Call Back If Your Phone Rings Once in the Middle of the Night

Scam phone calls are designed to manipulate people rather than have real conversations. Fraudsters often call at unexpected times, such as late at night or early in the morning, when people are tired and less likely to think carefully.

They may ask simple questions that encourage victims to reply with “yes,” hoping to record the response and potentially misuse it during fraudulent activities. Although many stories about “yes” recordings are exaggerated, phone scams remain a genuine threat.
One of the best ways to stay safe is to avoid answering calls from unknown numbers, especially if they ring briefly or arrive at unusual hours. If the call is legitimate, the person will usually leave a voicemail or contact you another way. If you answer and the conversation immediately feels suspicious or makes you uncomfortable, simply hang up. You are never required to continue speaking with an unknown caller.
Taking a few simple precautions can greatly reduce your risk. Turn on your phone’s spam and call-blocking features, regularly review your bank accounts and credit card statements, and check your phone bill for any unfamiliar activity. If you notice anything suspicious, contact your bank, phone carrier, or credit card provider immediately so they can investigate and help protect your accounts.
The most important defense is trusting your instincts. Scammers often create a sense of urgency or pressure to make victims act without thinking. Legitimate organizations rarely demand immediate responses during unexpected phone calls, especially in the middle of the night. By remaining cautious, protecting your personal information, and refusing to engage with suspicious callers, you can significantly reduce the chances of becoming a victim of phone fraud and keep your personal and financial information secure.
