Surprising Hack Every Driver Needs to Know

The viral claim that keeping “1 glass of salt in your car” is a life-saving hack has spread widely on Facebook, often framed with dramatic hooks like a police officer’s secret tip. However, there’s no credible evidence supporting it, and it may actually cause harm.

Posts claim salt can absorb moisture, neutralize odors, dry wet interiors, or aid traction—but these don’t hold up. A single glass of salt can’t meaningfully dehumidify a cabin compared to commercial desiccants, and it won’t help traction unless spread under tires. Worse, open salt attracts moisture, risking a damp, corrosive mess.In reality, salt is one of a car’s biggest enemies, especially in winter. Road salt causes rust and corrosion on brake lines, frames, and undercarriages, and experts recommend washing it off quickly. Loose salt inside a car also risks staining upholstery or corroding metal trim.Instead, try proven alternatives: a cut potato or anti-fog spray for windows, a silica gel dehumidifier for moisture, cat litter or sand for traction, and baking soda for odors.Real safety comes from tested advice—skip the salt glass and stick with what actually works.
