Anderson’s early professional life included teaching Shakespeare in Florida before joining Voice of America, where he worked in film and television. During the Vietnam War, he contributed to building television network facilities in South Vietnam and helped train local staff. His work later extended to Iran, where he collaborated with the U.S. Foreign Service and State Department to help establish radio and television networks. Alongside this, he taught English, organized art exhibits, and produced stage performances, reflecting his broad talents and interests.

After completing his studies at LAMDA, Anderson became a theater director in West Virginia before focusing on acting. He appeared in a variety of films, television series, and stage productions. He is widely recognized for his role as Head Bull Haig in The Shawshank Redemption and for his appearance as Burt in Gilmore Girls. Beyond acting, he enjoyed painting, music, nature, and animals.
