Vertical ridges running from the cuticle to the tip often become more noticeable with age, including after forty. Changes in nail growth and moisture can leave nails drier and less smooth. Mild, longstanding ridges without other symptoms usually aren’t a cause for concern. They do not, by themselves, prove a vitamin deficiency. Moisturizing your nails and cuticles, wearing gloves for cleaning, and avoiding aggressive buffing can help protect them. A balanced diet supports healthy nail growth; supplements are not automatically necessary.

What deserves attention is a new or significant change. Grooves running across the nail may follow an illness or another interruption in growth. A new or widening brown or black stripe—especially on one nail—should be assessed promptly, because melanoma is one possible, though uncommon, cause. Pain, marked splitting, discoloration, or separation from the nail bed also warrant medical advice. The goal is awareness, not alarm: notice changes, care gently, and seek help when needed.
