Joel had spotted the small child emerging between parked cars as a delivery truck reversed toward her. He shouted, but the driver didn’t hear. With no time to wait, the eleven-year-old sprinted forward, grabbed her, and hurled himself away from the vehicle. He twisted as they fell, taking the impact so she landed on him. When his mother reached them, his knees and palm were scraped, his shirt torn. Yet his first concern wasn’t his own pain. He wanted her to know the girl was safe.
His mother embraced him, then loosened her hold when he winced. Moments later, the little girl’s mother arrived and gathered her daughter into her arms. Turning to Joel, she told him he had saved her child. He looked down and answered simply, “I just ran.” To his mother, he was still her little boy—and now she knew how courage could coexist with that.
