Her parents separated shortly after her birth, and her father was largely absent from her life. Applegate has spoken openly about the instability she experienced as a child, including abuse, neglect, and witnessing her mother’s addiction. She recalled painful memories of seeing her mother cry on the floor and living in an environment filled with drugs and unpredictable adults.

In her memoir released in 2026, she also revealed that she was abused by a babysitter when she was just five years old. Despite the difficult circumstances, Applegate began working in entertainment at an early age. She appeared on television as a toddler alongside her mother on Days of Our Lives and later landed small acting roles as a child.Her big breakthrough came in 1987 when she was cast as Kelly Bundy on the hit sitcom Married… With Children.

The role made her famous almost overnight and turned her into one of television’s most recognizable young stars. Over the years, Applegate built an impressive career, earning awards and recognition for roles in shows like Friends, where she won an Emmy, and films such as The Sweetest Thing and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. She later starred in the acclaimed Netflix series Dead to Me.

In recent years, Applegate has faced major personal challenges. She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2021 and has since spoken about the physical pain and limitations caused by the disease. She has stepped back from many on-screen roles but continues voice work and advocacy.
