A closer look suggested the unfamiliar object might be an organism rather than discarded material. Its flexible appearance and apparent movement led me to photographs of leeches, which offered a possible explanation for what I was seeing. But a resemblance was not proof. Without expert advice, I could not confirm its identity, much less determine a species. Checking nearby pipes and corners brought no obvious explanation for how it had arrived, leaving that part of the encounter unresolved.
Afterward, I found myself noticing shadows and small shapes I would ordinarily have ignored. There was no sign of a bite, injury, or continuing danger, yet the uncertainty lingered longer than I expected. The hardest part was not knowing what had interrupted my sense of safety at home. In time, I could separate that discomfort from evidence of an actual threat. Being careful made sense; treating every unanswered question as a warning did not.
